As per historians, the origin of the Bengali New Year dates back to the 15th Century. During that time of the Mughal rule, an agricultural tax (khajna) was levied on the Bengali peasants. Now, as the taxation was levied based on the Islamic lunar calendar, it didn’t match with the harvest time of the-then Bengal. Thus, the Mughal emperor Akbar instructed his royal astronomer to devise a new harvest calendar that would match with the Bengal’s harvest season. And, hereby, the Bengali New Year or Poila Boishakh was incepted.
